Yesterday afternoon-evening leading up to the BYU-U of U
football game, the Mormon Third Eye surveyed Facebook and Instagram posts supporting
either of the teams (and sometimes both) to select the most clever, entertaining,
and gospel-themed message. This was a tough call since so many posts created by
U of U fans were extremely clever and entertaining yet lacking a gospel
message. However, after several
strenuous minutes of review waiting for the game to begin (the war had started
at least several weeks earlier) a winner was found!
And the winner is… (Drum
role please) the “God vs. Satan; Who Will Win?”
The post was a picture of a glorious, heavenly cloud-laced
sunrise, with the statement God vs. Satan; Who Will Win?” superimposed over it.
The key winning element of this entry, however, was the witty banter between
fans from both sides that followed it, attempting to actually answer the
question: (this is not an exact quote)
“U of U fan: Probably
neither, since neither of them actually exist.”
“BYU fan comeback:
Spoken like a true U of U fan; Satan wants us to deny he exists.”
BAM!
BAM!
Regardless of what you think about either school, the bottom
line is that one of Satan’s most clever strategies is to convince us that he does
not exist, that there is no sin, and that any choice you make is good. “And
behold, others he flattereth away,
and telleth them there is no hell;
and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none—and thus he whispereth
in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from
whence there is no deliverance.” (2 Nephi 28:22).
I know that BYU lost this game, and that U of U has a better
football program. However, there are a few things more important than football, and even
more important than the Holy War waged every fall; knowing that there is God
and goodness and Satan and evil is one of them.
