We all know that finding opportunities to share the precious pearls of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others requires a lot of faith, prayer, and nerve. We are increasingly being asked to put more faith in the Lord’s ability to help us in this great work. First, we were asked to pray for the fulltime missionaries, that they might be blessed with opportunities to teach the gospel. Then, we were encouraged to ask the Lord that we, your average church member, would have His help in finding interested people to teach. Most recently, we have been taught that the work is so important, that the Lord is even willing to send people to us; all we have to do is open our mouths. However recently, I suspect that some fulltime missionaries may have taken this to the extreme, and been asking the Lord to inspire some of his children who may be interested in learning more about the gospel to go door-knocking and find missionaries that will teach them.
This really happened in a mission in Colorado about this time last year. A recently returned missionary told me that one night, a little after 10:00 pm, they had just finished their prayers, asking for help in finding investigators to teach. They were getting ready to bed down for the night when there was a knock at the door. On the other side was a neighbor from a few doors down. “Are you the Mormon missionaries?” he asked.
“Yes, we are!” replied the missionaries, already dressed in their most modest pajamas.
“I’m so glad I found you!” he continued. “ I’ve been looking for missionaries to teach me more about your church, and I saw you ride by my house earlier this evening, so I just went knocking up the street hoping to find you. Can you teach me?”
They invited him in and taught him about the Restoration, all while wearing their most modest pajamas.
So… Can we start praying that people will start knocking doors in our neighborhoods asking for members of the church to help them find the gospel, or is that too much to ask?
I guess it depends on how much faith you have. Hopefully we'll be wearing our most modest pajamas.
